Monday 4/30 Draft Questions - Zahra McKee

  • Why have home altars been primarily created by and tended for by women? How does this tie into the gender roles of Catholicism?
  • In the National Endowment of the Arts National Heritage Tribute video to Ofelia Esparza, Ofelia Esparza explains how she has crafted altars with her mother, children, grandchildren, etc. to honor and remember their ancestors. Why do you think it is so important that the tradition of altars be shared with all family members?
  • While altars are such a personal home tradition, many artists like Ofelia Esparaza have started creating larger monumental altars to share with larger community groups. Do you think this is a positive shift or should home altars remain at home?
