Brainstorm #4

Sandoval’s ‘differential consciousness’ or methodology of emancipation, calls for solidarity amongst all people who have suffered under the oppression of a colonial system, in pursuit of social movement and change. An obvious point of connection between Sandoval’s ideas and Womxn Who Rock, is the notion that “people in social movements and community are the producers of knowledge” and the various organizers and activist in the film who used oral and soulful storytelling to produce rock music. Throughout the film various artists called attention to the importance of organized activism and commitment to marginalized communities, while also supporting each other across varying forms of identity and perspective. This mestiza (mixing) of peoples in pursuit of a new future is exactly what Sandoval was referencing. Additionally the Womxn in Womxn who rock reported finding belonging, community, and freedom in reclaiming music (punk/rock) as a place of freedom in the absence of western rules.
