Week 5 Brainstorm - Abby Hecko
In the film, Senorita Extravida, it focuses on the hundreds of murders and disappearances of young women in Juarez Mexico. One of the mothers of a young woman who disappeared states, “The government said we were out at night and dressed provocatively. They blamed the women and the murders increased,” (1:04:40). Hundreds of women have gone missing in the past 30 years, and the government has done nothing. This lack of action enforces the patriarchal and creates an impression that young women are disposable. Women have been using art as an act of resilience against the social injustice against these young women. For example, in Juarez, people have been painting crosses in public spaces to illustrate, “the cries for help we never heard/the screams of their voices,” (Fregoso 21). This art is a public way to confront the tragedies of the disappearing women. Another form of art is the film, Senorita Extravida, through the interviews and primary interviews of people directly affected by these murders, it is a powerful act of resilience.
