Questions for Alice Bag - Sarah Yang

Hello Alice! I’m Sarah, a first year student at UW. I’m looking forward to hearing more about you and your experiences! Thank you for speaking with our class.

In “Death to Racism and Punk Rock Revisionism”, Habell-Pallan noted that “punk created an experience that exceeded the socially constructed categories of nation, race, gender, and sexuality” (264). In what ways can you see the influence punk and Chicana punk has had on today’s music industry and culture?

Habell-Pallan also discussed the tension between race in music “as punk drifts toward essentializing both whiteness and nonwhiteness” (262). Do you think that the music industry has changed much in this regard? Has culture changed in this regard?
