4/20 Draft Questions

By: YuYu Madigan

1) In the Grand Park LA article featuring Ofelia Esparza, the author claims that the Dia de Los Muertos celebration is growing in popularity every year; why do you suppose this is happening and how can one keep the traditional values and essence alive through mass spread?
2) In the Rhetoric of the Object page 88, the author talks about objects having to "take an equally seductive argument, an excess of colors, lights, flowers, and the body" in order to compete and showcase their symbolism. Do you agree that this mass over stimulation encourages the exaggeration of senses or are there other factors at play and what are the effects of this intensity?
3) Altar, Alter (p96) talks about how Chicana/o artists "transferred the popular domestic altar into the art-installation and related forms" which has led to "some [appearing] in mainstream galleries or museums". How do you feel about such a historically personal creation being taken public like this?
