My name is Paul Druta and I am a second year student in the Honors Program at the University of Washington. I first learned about you and your contributions to the West Coast punk scene this past fall when I took a class called American Sabor. Since then, I have been very interested in learning more about you and punk as a genre. Below I have provided a few questions that I have for you:
1. Music has greatly changed over the course of the last few decades, with some genres becoming much more popular in mainstream culture (such as hip hop) while other genres have become less popular (such as rock). Seeing how quickly genre popularity comes and goes, as a musician, how do you ensure that you are able to artistically express your own style while still being able to convey a message in a way that is accessible to various age groups?
2. In this class, we have discussed the writings of Chela Sandoval and her methodologies of emancipation. One of the important ideas in Sandoval’s writing is an emphasis on using coalition politics, the bringing together of many people of different ideologies and backgrounds around a common goal, within social movements against neoliberalism . What are some of the ways that you have strived to encourage coalition politics with your music?
Thank you and I am looking forward to meeting you over Zoom on Monday!
