1. In the National Endowment of the Arts video Ofelia Esparza talks about the three deaths that we all experience. One when we die, the second when we are burried, and the third when we are forgotten. She says that altares help to prevent the third death. If we look at altares in the context of Chicana feminist activism, what does the third death look like?
2. Looking into the future and thinking about having to make my own altar I want to know more about altares in other cultures as well. The reading and videos discuss the use of altares in latinx/indigenous/catholic/chicanx cultures, what other cultures do we see altares, are they used in a similar way? Do they always have that spiritual connection discussed in Altar/Alter? Can you think of ways we see altares outside of chicanx/latinx culture in western culture?
3. What kind of practices does you family have in order to remember those in your family who have passed away? Are they physical or oral and how does the medium help you interact with you ancestors?
