1) On the first page of “Rhetoric of the Object”, Gonzalez describes the home altar as a matriarchal province compared to the “patriarchal structure of the public church”. Do you think this home altar has always meant to be matriarchal, or do you think it represents how Chicana women have formed their own space within the Catholic religion?
2) On page 90 of “Rhetoric of the Object”, Gonzalez states that “memory become a process of situating”. In other readings, how have we seen Chicana activists honor certain memories by situating them in new art forms? For example, how are memories of traditional cultural practices situated in art such as murals, paintings, songs, etc?
3) Ofelia Esparza states that her inspiration for creating these altars is to remember the legacy of those who have passed away. Does your family have a way of remembering those who have died, or can you think of examples in other cultures?
