The “Dissident Globalization” piece illustrates the ways that
neoliberalism and the effects of can be battled and resolved through coalition
among groups. As neoliberalism thrives off the concepts of power over those
with less money or influence, the hands of a few individuals with money and influence
set the norm which can only be overturned by coalition and strength in unity. The
Nuts and Bolts of Chicana Feminist Theory video is very helpful in
understanding Chela Sandoval’s and other Chicana Feminist frameworks as it
highlights the struggle for power, dominant ideologies, and the fight. “Differential
consciousness” according to Sandoval is an unknowing of a subject position that
has been accepted and re-understanding it to have a new meaning or role within
society. In the context of feminism and equality, this theory means to set
aside differences between women and unite to set the standard of equality and
equity among all people.
The spirit of the unconference Women Who Rock supports
and embodies the work and ideologies of Chela Sandoval as it sets the stage for
women to defy the standards set by society for their role in the world and the
music industry. As the punk genre had traditionally been dominated by male
voices, women stand together to produce a sound that illustrates their strength
and power of defiance. As the Women Who Rock piece describes, “As we stage
physical spaces of convivencia—what scholar/artivista/musician
Martha Gonzalez theorizes as the co-creation of social space—both within and
outside of the university, we aim to create multi-generational, multi-genre
musical experiences in community”. By stepping into and dominating this
genre, women assert their voices and force the world to re-understand what it
means to be a woman and their role in society
