Brainstorm #4 Week 3 - Angie Lai

Sandoval proposes "dissident globalization" as a series of methods as a remedy to the neoliberalism that Martinez speaks of. Martinez actually defines neoliberalism as the "neo-colonization of Latin America", and Sandoval describes postmodern globalization as a "neocolonizing force" in her article "Dissident Globalizations, Emancipatory Methods, Social-Erotics" (26). Both authors agree on the definition and effects of neoliberalism, and Sandoval provides a list of principles under U.S third world feminism as a methodology for emancipating all who are oppressed. Essentially, the goal is to see power and democratize it through redistribution to all, "creating coalition between oppositional groups" and "making interdisciplinary connections" (26). In reading about the concept of "differential consciousness", I was both intrigued and a little puzzled at first, and I'm not sure if I understand it in its entirety still, but the analogy to The Matrix in the video The Nuts and Bolts of Chicana Feminist Theory helped quite a bit because that's one of my favorite movies (3:55). I understand that it's about recognizing the power systems we exist in and using that knowledge to free ourselves.

"The Womxn Who Rock Oral History Project" video was inspiring to me. As a woman of color who is also really into rock music, it was cool to see all of these womxn who were creating space for themselves within the discourse around music and actually making music too. Sandoval's "differential consciousness" is embodied in the Womxn Who Rock Oral History archive and the forming of "affinities inside difference" by highlighting great examples of people with multimedia affinities centered around music. Womxn Who Rock brings womxn from different backgrounds together, creating those "interdisciplinary connections" of resilience that Sandoval speaks of (26).
