Week 2 Blog Post

Hi my name is Caroline Johnson. One interconnection is how many of these social groups of Chicana women created newspapers to discuss what they were doing and give advice. Chapter 2 illustrates how for students on campus and for navigating the politics of dealing with men, and other issues, these Chicano groups created newspapers. An example is how, “El Plan de Santa Barbara laid out a blueprint for education” (64). Similarly, in Chapter 3 of Blackwell’s book she discusses how, “El Tiempo Illustrado, one of the newspapers at the time that carried news about these women, featured a picture of eighteen arrested members of the group on May 28, 1911” (107). Alice Bag’s “Chicano Power” shows how when she went to see the march and how “I felt good about being part of something as powerful as the Chicano movement…”(70). It shows how the march and its result would impact the relationship she would have with groups such as the police and could lead into her making something such as “White Justice”. The video and song are very powerful, and this form of art allows her to show how horrible the event was. When she says “swining their batons” at 1:16 and you see footage of it and other parts of the video, it is very hard to watch. This form of art shows how it can impact and teach others just what these people have gone through. And there is even footage from 2007 (2:49) showing how this issue has not been resolved.
