In “La Ofrenda”, the use of dichotomies in written history is highlighted when the narrator says “The universe was a single unified whole. The endless struggle of opposites, night and day, light and dark, life and death.” (minute 22). How does viewing life through dichotomies impact one’s expression through their art?
In “El Mundo Femenino”, the Mesa-Bains makes references to a variety of Chicana feminist artists and the mediums through which they communicated their expressions like the murals that Baca created (p. 309), photos that Barraza took (p.310), and the videos done by Yolanda Lopez (p. 314). How does the use of different art mediums contribute to how effectively the artist’s message was communicated? Are certain movements/causes restricted to certain mediums?
“El Mundo Femenino” discusses the contradictions that Chicanas experienced as “Tradition and innovation are intertwined” (p.317). How have Chicana artists balanced maintaining their traditions and culture while utilizing innovative, progressive art practices to highlight their experiences?
