Monday Draft Questions - Abby Hecko

1. In the “National Endowment of the Arts National Heritage Tribute video to Ofelia Esparza" video. She speaks of what goes on an alter and how to create one. If you cannot afford to make an alter, what are some alternatives to celebrating the dead?

2. In the same video, it is discussed how stories and oral tradition are passed down, (3:12). I am wondering if there are any oral traditions or stories that masses of people believe. Are there any stories that all houses share during day of the dead? (I am thinking like Santa Claus, or the tooth fairy).

3. After reading, "Altar, alter," it discusses the amount of creative freedom one has when creating an alter, it is seen as a "space of religious and gender freedom,"(93). My question is, are there any items that should not go on an altar? Are there any items that would be culturally offensive?
