Monday Draft Question (4/13/20) - Pavithra Prabhu

My name is Pavithra Prabhu.

1. In the La Ofrenda documentary (20:30 – 20:48), a woman gave an explanation of the purpose of having the Day of the Dead celebration, claiming that the people who celebrate them have difficult lives and it was something that they can look forward to in the future, making their fear of death dissipate. Do you agree with this explanation? Why or why not?
2. In the La Ofrenda documentary (41:00 – 41:49), a woman explained a Spanish phrase that translated into “Culture heals” and explained that it can also be translated as “Go back to your roots”; this phrase emphasizes the need to maintain one’s cultural integrity in order to maintain a healthy life. How can this phrase be utilized in the context of the Chicano movement? How is it important to maintain one’s cultural traditions in order to uphold the Chicano movement?
3. In “Introduction: Invocation, Ofrenda” (Pg. 3), Laura E. Perez states that “Chicanas were engaging the spiritual alongside more familiar areas of social struggle”. What are the benefits of integrating spirituality to the Chicano movement? What are its disadvantages?
