Sandoval proposes “dissident globalization” as a coalition-building means to emancipation.
Under Neoliberal policies and transnational capitalism, the pursuit of profit relies upon the creation
and expansion of categories of difference. As a remedio to the breakdown of interaction and community
under Neoliberalism, dissident globalization “depends on the activism of an internationalist
citizen-warrior who is able to call upon the transformative capacities of consciousness and of the
collective body” (Sandoval, p.21). Thus, dissident globalization represents a revolutionary praxis under
which small interactions and relationships build to create a complex, emancipatory movement.
While Neoliberalism relies on subverting the power of people, dissident globalization is a reclamation
of this power through tapping into collective knowledge and experience. The intention of the unconference to “create an open structure through which unexpected, transformative and even healing conversations might emerge” embodies Sandoval’s “differential consciousness” through holding space for conversations on power and its equitable distribution (Habell-Pallán, Sonnet Retman, & Macklin). The structure of the unconference creates room for emergence through attention to relationship building and connected differences. Both the identity and ideological exploration provided by the unconference and the creation of rock music, can be viewed as methods of accessing differential consciousness. Non-normative structures such as those of rock music or the unconference are oppositional to the forces that seek to diminish the power of womxn from marginalized communities.
