Thursday 5/14 Draft Questions- Emily Eckey

1. “Voicing Citizenship: Undocumented Women and Social Media” by Jilian Baez discusses the case studies of two undocumented women in the immigrants rights movement, Elvira Arellano and Flor Crisostomo (Baez 56). How does social media, as an interactive and assessable platform, enable these women to voice claims to citizenship in unconventional ways?

2. In “Cyphers: Hip-Hop and Improvisation” by Paul Watkins and Rebecca Caines, a cypher is defined as “a gathering of rappers, beatboxers, and/or breakers in a circle” (Watkins and Caines). How is the cypher welcoming and model a practice of teaching that is inclusive and improvisational in nature?

3. In the BBC audio feature, “Hip Hop Feministas: Latina America,” the reporter interviews talented young female rappers from Guatemala, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Costa Rica and Ecuador (2:00). How do these 12 young women from 10 different regions come together and use their voices to fight misogamy?

4. In the intro of “BLACK MAMA Mujeres de Acero - Steel women,” the founder of TalentoxTalento discusses how their main philosophy is to make diversity a factor of distinction rather than a factor of discrimination (0:10). How does Black Mama embody the ideas of this campaign?
