Altars
are a form of healing, and thus should be considered a sacred space. This
concept of a call to action through a reminder in the form of ofrenda translates
to many forms of society, from the Black Lives Matter movement to the families
hoping to honor their loved ones. These altars shouldn't be considered just as
decorations but a sacred space for people to gather and remember those that
have profoundly impacted them. Communities around the world have their
own ways of remembering those that have passed, but giving a platform for the
deceased to speak through the remembrance we give them are key for mourning and
keeping the legacy of the deceased intact. The altars are multifaceted in the
messages they communicate, and the tasteful inclusion of different items and
symbols to honor the fallen makes ofrendas some of the more poignant forms of
remembrance that we have as a society.
