5/4 Monday Draft Question: Grace Grotz

  1. In Martha Gonzalez’s bio, Gonzalez reflects on how “the UW was initially a very empty space” (7) where she found it difficult to find community. But, she eventually formed connections through the club GO-MAP. How do you think this experience impacted Gonzalez? Do you think searching for community inspired her other projects?
  2. The Seattle Fandango Project video describes how, in fandango, “there are no performers, there are only participants” (1:05) because everyone can contribute. How does eliminating the role of the audience impact the art and the artists’ message?
  3. In Avendaños’ article “Sounding out Tarima Temporalities”, the author describes fandango dancers as “activistas who from listening, receptive spiritual stance, rise to their own visions and shift into acting them out” (6). How can the process of creating art lead to actions/activism?
  4. In “Mixing in the Kitchen”, Gonzalez describes how having a baby impacted her music and she also notes how many of the female musicians she collaborated with brought their children to the recordings (73). How can having one’s children or family around inspire an artist?
